Albert R. Walker, Jr., and Cynthia G. Walker founded Charity Family Life in June 1993. Its vision sought to strengthen and bring wholeness to the community. It began as a Summer Enlightenment Pilot Program, starting with 10 children from Whitcomb, Mosby,
and Fairfield
Courts. The program
targeted at-risk
children living in
government-subsidized
housing. The
duration of the
pilot program was
eight weeks. The
children spent a
total of five hours
per day in the
program.
In conjunction with the Summer Enlightenment Program, Charity Family Life began an After-School Tutorial Program that fall. Most of the same children who attended the summer program also attended the After- School program.
Since the summer of 1993, Charity Family Life has been in an upward motion of excellence, experiencing continual improvement in its programs and enhancing the fabric of the community. It serves more than 110 children each year. Our goal is to begin with elementary school children, broadening to teenagers, and eventually expanding to adults. Clearly, with each new endeavor, our goals are being achieved.
